Is your pet living life to the fullest? Everyone adores their pet but not everyone knows what their pet needs from them to help them live a long, healthy life. That’s why we made a seven-day action plan. We included something for everyday of the week that will help your furry friend stick by your side longer, and ultimately be happier.
Sunday – Make an addition to your family
Visit your local animal shelter and ask the staff to help you pick out the right breed for your lifestyle. Most individuals that work at shelters interact with the animals in the facility every day and know each pet’s temperament, which is why they are great people to help you find the right fit for your family. Whether you’re a laid-back person, an outdoorsy person, or a walker, there’s always a good fit for a furry friend for you and your family. One good thing about adopting from a shelter is that that pet you choose will, most likely, already be spayed and neutered, so that’s one less thing you have to worry about.
Monday – Help your pet socialize!
Helping your pet become more comfortable around other animals, people, places and certain activities is extremely important. Un-socialized pets often become fearful of new situations in their life and can act out in fear aggression, which can be misinterpreted as a bad dog or cat. Take your dog to the dog park to socialize with other dogs, walk them around your neighborhood to help them socialize with people. Look up pet friendly places you can take them too, so they can be more comfortable in that type of setting if you tend to go out a lot.
Tuesday – Exercise!
According to the AVMA, 52.7% of dogs and 57.9% of cats in the United States are overweight. That’s why it’s important to help your pet exercise every day of the week for at least 30 minutes a day. It’s even better if you exercise together because it’ll help improve cardiovascular health and maintain a healthy weight for the both of you. Not only will engaging in a hearty workout together help your physical and mental health, but it also strengthens the bond between the two of you. Take your dog for a walk around your neighborhood, or stroll down an easy hike that both of you can handle. Remember, physical fitness with your pet is not a sprint, it’s a marathon! Start small and move your way up!
Wednesday – Vet Check-up
Sadly, people still don’t take their pets to the vet. Regular check-ups are not only important for people, but also very important for pets too. Pets often hide signs of illness. Your pet could have a health problem and you would have no idea. It’s better to take your pet to the vet regularly so if they find any issues they can treat the problem earlier rather than later – that also means you save money by not waiting until the problem progresses!
Thursday – Toy & Treat Thursday
There’s never a wrong time to spoil your pet! Bring them home some new toys they will love or a few tasty, new treats you’ve been meaning to have them try. If you’re looking for something completely new, why not make your own homemade treats? There are plenty of recipes online for making your own, and your pet will love you forever for how delicious they taste!
Friday – Emergency Kit for Pets
You know your family emergency plan where you have a little bag or box full of all the things you would need in case of an emergency? Do you have one for your pet? They need one, too! Don’t forget to include your four-legged family members in your plan and prepare each of them a little kit in case of an emergency. Not sure where to start? Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you out!
Saturday – Endless Amounts of Love
Treat your pet like family. Give them extra attention, hugs, kisses, and cuddles. Spoil them occasionally and give them all the belly rubs your pet could possibly want. Your dog or cat will not only love getting attention from you, but you’ll also receive the love back with years of cuddles.
Celebrate this special week by acting like it's your pet's birthday week! Love, care, and spoil them every day this week - and for the rest of their life - and they'll live a long, happy, healthy life!
